Direct single-mode cw laser sources cover a broad
wavelength interval for an almost unimaginable range of applications. However,
there exist practically no such sources well below 390 nm. Moreover, the output
power of direct sources in the visible range is clearly limited compared to
those in the infrared.
This presentation provides an introduction to resonant frequency conversion in nonlinear media, which can overcome these borders. Using examples from the Horizon project “Deep Ultraviolet Laser For Quantum Technology” (UVQuanT), it will be shown how such laser systems can be used to open up new fields in fundamental research.
