November 19, 2024

In November, an information stele in honor of Dr. Clara Haber, née Immerwahr, was unveiled on the grounds of the Fritz Haber Institute of the Max Planck Society. This stele was erected by the district office of Steglitz-Zehlendorf and is located in front of the so-called Haber Villa at the corner of Hittorfstraße and Faradayweg, 14195 Berlin.

During the ceremonial unveiling, Deputy District Mayor and District Councillor for Education, Culture, and Sports, Cerstin Richter-Kotowski, spoke about the significance of the red information steles in Steglitz-Zehlendorf. She emphasized that this is the 30th stele and the first dedicated to a woman, while the others predominantly focused on events.

Prof. Dr. Beatriz Roldán Cuenya, Managing Director of the Fritz Haber Institute, highlighted the importance of working on equality for the institute and the Max Planck Society. She stressed the necessity of making women in science more visible as an important component to give role models for the younger generation.

Science historian Prof. Dr. Annette Vogt, the author of the stele's text, gave a lecture on the historical figure Clara Immerwahr. She discussed her challenges in obtaining a doctorate, her brief research period, and her marriage to chemist Fritz Haber.

The district office invited the public to this ceremonial unveiling, which was well attended. Following the event, Prof. Dr. Beatriz Roldán Cuenya invited the attendees to the Fritz Haber Institute for a joint exchange. In the seminar room of the Haber Villa, guests could also view the MPG Nobel Laureates Gallery, which showcases all Nobel laureates of the Max Planck Society.

The event was a significant occasion that provides the public with valuable context about the historical figures and events in Steglitz-Zehlendorf. The Fritz Haber Institute views this engagement as an important sign to continue working on equality and to reflect on the progress made so far.

Special thanks to the district office for this important initiative.
