Roentgen Medal for Roldán

FHI Director Prof. Dr Beatriz Roldán Cuenya received the Röntgen Medal 2022 in recognition of her research on catalysis, especially electrocatalysis, and the associated possibilities for the use of new sustainable energy sources of the future. The prize was awarded on 10 September by Remscheid's Lord Mayor Burkhard Mast-Weisz in the Klosterkirche in Remscheid-Lennep.
 

The Röntgen plaque is awarded annually in commemoration of the 50th anniversary of the award of the first Nobel Prize to Wilhelm Conrad Röntgen. The Röntgen plaque is traditionally presented by the Lord Mayor of Remscheid to personalities who have rendered outstanding services to the progress and dissemination of Röntgen's discoveries. The plaque has become a prestigious scientific award in professional circles. The Society of Friends and Sponsors of the German Röntgen Museum Remscheid-Lennep e.V. selects suitable scientists from all over the world and proposes them to the Lord Mayor for honour.

Born in 1976 in Oviedo, northern Spain, Beatriz Roldán Cuenya began her academic career with a Master of Science degree in physics in Spain in 1998 and a doctorate in physics in Germany in 2001. Her postdoctoral research took her to the Department of Chemical Engineering at the University of California Santa Barbara (USA). In 2004, she moved to the Department of Physics at the University of Central Florida (UCF) as Assistant Professor and was appointed Full Professor in 2012. In 2013, Beatriz Roldan Cuenya became Chair of Solid State Physics at Ruhr-Universität Bochum (Germany). In 2017, she moved to the Fritz Haber Institute of the Max Planck Society as Director and Head of the Department of Interfacial Sciences. She is the recipient of numerous awards, including this year's Faraday Medal from the UK's Royal Society of Chemistry.
