New Podcast about Green Hydrogen

June 29, 2022

Is hydrogen the "champagne" of renewable energies? FHI Director Prof. Dr. Robert Schlögl discussed this question with Prof. Dr. Franziska Holz (German Institute for Economic Research) and Dr. Steffi Hlawenka (Helmholtz-Zentrum Berlin). The new episode of the podcast "Berlin Research - Forschung in Berlin", hosted by science journalist Thomas Prinzler, was released today.

Mankind is facing a global challenge, the energy turnaround is needed.

For years, there has been an intense debate about the use of fossil energy sources, which are not infinitely available and are also harmful to the environment. In addition, the demand for energy continues to rise and cannot be met with conventional renewable energy sources.

This is where hydrogen comes as the green energy source of the future into the game. It is celebrated almost messianically - and not only by politicians. But what is in it? Is it a real opportunity or is it just an illusory giant? How much hydrogen do we actually need to cover our energy needs and how does production work? That's what the new podcast episode of Berlin Research - Forschung in Berlin, the BR50 podcast, is all about.

Green hydrogen is produced with the help of renewable energies and is considered as an important component of sustainable energy systems. Hydrogen stores energy like batteries and can be processed into chemicals and synthetic fuels to enable mobility and many industrial processes in a climate-neutral way. Long-distance transport also seems generally easy and inexpensive to implement. But the challenges facing science, politics and society are discussed by moderator Thomas Prinzler with Prof. Dr Franziska Holz, Deputy Head of the Department of Energy, Transport, Environment at the German Institute for Economic Research Berlin, Dr Steffi Hlawenka from the Helmholtz Centre Berlin for Materials and Energy and project coordinator of the CatLab research platform, and Prof. Dr Robert Schlögl, Director at the Fritz Haber Institute of the Max Planck Society Berlin.
