Structural Dynamics of Water, Ice, and Chemical Reactions Revealed by X-ray Experiments at FELs

X-ray science has evolved dramatically with the use of X-ray free electron lasers (XFELs) that can generate ultrashort X-ray pulses with unprecedented brilliance and coherence. This has been a breakthrough for many X-ray related techniques on a broad range of scientific disciplines and brought us to investigate many groundbreaking new sciences that was previously not accessible. By utilizing the full capabilities of XFELs, our research group is studying structural dynamics of liquid water [1,2], crystalline ice [3], and various chemical reactions.

Water is the most important material for our existence on Earth and plays an essential role. Despite its importance, the microscopic origin of the anomalous properties of water has been elusive and thus there has been intense debates for many decades mainly due to the lack of direct experimental evidences. In this talk, I will present our recent experimental results on 1) the origin of anomalous properties of water and 2) melting and recrystallization dynamics of crystalline ice. Our ongoing projects on studying reaction mechanism of homogeneous catalysts will also be briefly introduced.
