Visualizing Electron Localization and Minibands in WS2/WSe2 Moiré Superlattices
The ability to engineer flattened electronic bands by controlling interlayer effects in moiré superlattices of two-dimensional materials has opened the door for material physicists to understand and control correlated electron phenomena in an unprecedentedly broad class of materials. Despite wide-ranging transport and optical signatures of correlated phases, a holistic understanding of how exotic quantum phases emerge remains elusive.

In this talk I will present our work on the heterobilayer WS2/WSe2 family combining nano-ARPES and optical reflectance contrast spectroscopy to study the evolution of the electronic structure from the weakly interacting, delocalized regime to a strongly localized regime, as the superlattice constant is increased in the heterobilayer MX2/M’X’2 family. Our study points toward an unanticipated and significant role for interlayer physics and hybridization in driving electron localization in TMDC moiré superlattices. Together, these advance our current understanding of electron localization in setting the preconditions for emergence of correlated phases in superlattices, while opening the way for study into more complex superlattice systems by direct, momentum-aware spectroscopy.
