Events & Leisure

Seminars, After Work Beers and other interesting gatherings

We organize a PhD party about every quarter of a year to socialize across departments. In summer there are often relaxed meetings in the park.

To get the latest news, please subscripe to the PhD-Mailing List.

As soon as you are enrolled at one of Berlin's universities, you can use the sports centers and classes of all universities. The facilities of FU are the ones that are closest to the institute. They have a huge variety of different classes on offer, check it out! During Corona, they have online classes.

We want to especially recommend the running classes at FU!

Divers should check out the Deutscher Unterwasser-Club Berlin and Tauchsportclub Berlin.

Fans of playing football/soccer can find a club in one of the many leisure leagues. The catholic church league was recommended to us (you don't have to be catholic).

There are several online sources where you can find interesting topics to volunteer:  Vostel or also and QuarantäneHeld*innen.

Queer Berlin

Berlin has a very active queer scene. We compiled some links that help you navigate it:

Gay Berlin - (partly in English)
Siegessäule, the queer city magazine (in German)
lgbtq+ at FU Berlin (English and German)
Autonomes Schwulenreferat AStA FU Berlin (English and German)

MPQueer is a network inside the PhDnet that wants to increase the visibility of LGBTQIA+ issues. You can follow them on Twitter and subscribe to their newsletter.

FluxFM is a great radio station for Indie, Alternative and Singer-Songwriter. They always have great suggestions for concerts and festivals in and around Berlin.

We really recommend Immergut Festival.

Classical Music and Opera

Berlin is home to three big high-class opera houses, a world-renowned ballet company and at least five independent symphony orchestras. All of them offer very generous student discounts.

ClassicCard is the discount card for the following organizations:

The Berliner Philharmoniker grant student discounts for under 28-year-olds. This is also valid for concerts by other performers, as long as the Philharmoniker are the organizers. Other concert agencies also offer various discounts for their concerts in the Philharmonie.

A lot of famous and good theaters are also located in berlin.

A plethora of museums has something to offer for everybody.

The "Staatliche Museen zu Berlin" is the organization of state-owned museums in Berlin. These are, amongst others, the world-famous Pergamonmuseum, the Hamburger Bahnhof and the Gemäldegalerie. Doesn't matter if you want to see the Ishtar Gate, Nefertiti or masterpieces by Rubens, Botticelli, Picasso, Beuys or Warhol - they have all that and much more.

If you want to become a regular, invest in a one-year pass! They have a 50% discount for students.
