PP&B Workshop - Experimental Control with EPICS and the Scientific Computing Infrastructure at FHI
Both days include an introductory morning session (10:00-12:00) and a hands-on afternoon session (14:00-16:00). While the first day (Tuesday) covers topics related to Experimental Control via EPICS, the second day (Wednesday) will focus on the FHI Compute Infrastructure and the Viper Supercomputer.

Day 1: Experimental Control with EPICS

EPICS Basics (Morning Session)

  • EPICS Infrastructure at FHI
  • EPICS Gateway Systems for Experiments

EPICS Hands-On (Afternoon Session)

  • Using a preconfigured EPICS Gateway System for Device Control (e.g, Oscilloscopes, Power Supplies, etc.)

Day 2: Scientific Computing Infrastructure

Introducing the FHI Compute Infrastructure and the VIPER Supercomputer at MPCDF (Morning Session)

  • Services & Use cases
  • Access & Registration
  • Advantages & Limitations
  • Open Space for Questions & Discussions

Computing Hands-on (Afternoon Session)

  • Setting up your Compute Account
  • Using Python, Matlab, HDFweb on Jupyterhub
  • Using the Virtual Desktop Servers
  • Opt.: Creating a simple Python notebook for plotting
  • Opt.: Using Python+Dask on a single or multiple Servers
  • Opt.: Using Widgets in Jupyterhub (e.g. Archive Widget)
  • Opt.: Using the Python Archive Interface in Jupyterhub
  • Opt.: Creating, Transferring, Submitting & Retrieving a Compute Job on the Viper Supercomputer.
  • Open Space for Questions & Hands-On support.

Registration: Not required.

Prerequisites::

  • For accessing the internal Documentation of the Compute Infrastructure and the Viper Supercomputer, you need an FHI Gitlab account: register with your fhi email address here: FHI Gitlab.
  • In order to follow the Hands-On session for using the Viper Supercomputer you need to register for an MPCDF account beforehand. Please have a look at: FHI Viper Wiki .
