Quantum sensors on Earth and in space

The development of quantum sensors has been one of the most important – and arguably currently most advanced – pillars of the ongoing efforts toutilize quantum technologies for practical applications. In this talk I will first present the Gravimetric Atom Interferometer (GAIN) developed at the Humboldt-University as a high-performance example for such a device. Then I will focus on the challenges of implementing compact and reliable laser systems for quantum sensors in the particularly demanding environment of space and how these challenges are addressed in various projects and joint efforts of the Humboldt-University and the Ferdinand-Braun-Institut / Leibniz Institut für Höchstfrequenztechnik.
