Doctorate for Sebastian Kunze

July 09, 2021

Today, two doctoral students, Sebastian Kunze and Philipp Grosse, defended their doctoral theses in online disputations.

Sebastian Kunze was doing research on structure and composition dynamics of single crystal copper interfaces and iron-silver, iron-copper nanoparticles. His examination committee was chaired by Prof. Dr. Prof. Dr. Anjana Devi from the Department of Chemistry at the Ruhr-University Bochum (RUB). Further members were Prof. Dr. Wolfgang Schuhmann and Prof. Dr. Martin Muhler, both from the Department of Chemistry of RUB, as well as Sebastian's supervisor Prof. Dr. Beatriz Roldán Cuenya from the Fritz Haber Institute (FHI) of the Max Planck Society.

Sebastian Kunze first joined the Roldán group in 2015 as an undergraduate student and then continued as a master student while Beatriz Roldán was a Professor in the Physics Department at the Ruhr-University Bochum. In April 2017, Sebastian became a PhD student, subsequently he moved with Prof. Roldán to the FHI in Berlin. He was one of the first students that joined her at the FHI and played a pivotal role during the transition from RUB to FHI, especially at re-establishing the research activities in Berlin involving complex ultrahigh vacuum (UHV) systems.

Sebastian’s dissertation studies resulted in seven publications in peer-reviewed journals of high impact and one more paper currently under review in Chemical Science with him as first author. His written and oral dissertation was rated Summa Cum Laude.

The ISC-FHI Department congratulates Sebastian for his excellent accomplishments!
