Honorary Doctorate for Gerard Meijer
On June 19, 2026, Prof. Dr. Gerard Meijer, Director of the Department of Molecular Physics at the Fritz Haber Institute, was awarded an honorary doctorate by the Faculty of Science at the University of Waterloo, Canada, in recognition of his outstanding scientific achievements as a molecular physicist.
"The world needs bright young minds with original ideas. Do what interests you most and what makes you happy." – These were the words Gerard Meijer addressed to the graduates of the University of Waterloo at the Spring 2026 Convocation ceremony at which he was awarded the "Doctor of Science, honoris causa" by the Faculty of Science. His words reflect his unique motivation as a molecular physicist. Driven by curiosity and the desire to explore the limits of physics, he developed groundbreaking technologies to shed light on fundamental questions in the world of the building blocks of life - molecules.
Honorary doctorates are the highest distinctions given by the University of Waterloo and are awarded to individuals whose outstanding achievements and contributions have had a meaningful impact on the University, their communities, their fields, and the world. The honorary doctorate for Prof. Meijer recognizes his outstanding scientific achievements as a molecular physicist and underscores his strong ties to the Canadian university. Prof. Meijer has been leading the Molecular Physics Department at the Fritz Haber Institute from 2002 to 2012 and again since 2017. The research of him and his department members focuses on molecular physics, spectroscopy and the development of new experimental methods, using laser equipment to reveal how molecules are structured and how they behave. Meijer is known for his groundbreaking advances, that have transformed the experimental study of molecules: He has developed methods that allow molecules to be slowed down, trapped, and precisely controlled. His work has enabled scientists to probe molecular structure, dynamics and interactions with unprecedented precision, establishing experimental foundations that continue to shape modern molecular science, precision measurement and emerging quantum technologies.
Prof. Meijer has a strong connection to the University of Waterloo, that has become a global hub for molecular sciences over the last decades. With their in-depth expertise on infrared free electron lasers (IR-FELs), the members of his team are supporting the construction of Waterloo's new "WaterFEL" facility. The Fritz Haber Institute is very pleased about the recognition of its director’s scientific achievements.
