
Nov. 23, 2026: Special Symposium for the 40th Anniversary of the Nobel Prize Award to
Prof. Ernst Ruska for the Invention of the Transmission Electron Microscope (TEM)
The transmission electron microscope is one of the most powerful analytical tools scientists have at their disposal for visualizing the structure and chemistry of both hard and soft materials. In 1986, the Nobel Prize for Physics was awarded to Prof. Ernst Ruska, a former director at the Fritz Haber Institute, for his invention of the transmission electron microscope.
To commemorate the 40th anniversary of the Nobel Prize to Prof. Ernst Ruska, the Fritz Haber Institute of the Max Planck Society (FHI) is organizing a special symposium on the 23rd of November 2026 at the Harnack Haus in Berlin.
This one-day symposium includes six plenary lectures by leading scientists in the area of transmission electron microscopy and its applications for the study functional materials, such as catalysts. The event will include a guided tour of the new Ernst Ruska exhibition in one of two towers that housed the the original TEMs which Prof. Ernst Ruska built when he was director of the Institute of Electron Microscopy at the FHI.
