Girls' Day 2026 at the Fritz Haber Institute

April 24, 2026

As part of this year’s Girls’ Day on April 23, 2026, 32 girls aged 10 to 15 visited the Fritz Haber Institute and gained insight into the diverse work carried out in the research groups and workshops through hands-on experiments and craft projects.

Girls’ Day has been held annually since 2001 and is a nationwide event designed to encourage girls and women to explore careers in traditionally male-dominated fields such as trades, technology, and the natural sciences. On April 23, 2026, under the motto “Your Day, Your Path!”, thousands of companies and institutions opened their doors to celebrate the 25th anniversary of Girls’ Day. The Fritz Haber Institute also participated with a varied program that gave the girls a comprehensive insight into the work of the researchers and staff in our precision engineering and electronics laboratories.

This year, 32 girls aged 10 to 15 visited us for Girls’ Day and got a first-hand look at the institute’s work through five different stations: In the Interface Science department, the girls got a glimpse into a chemistry lab and were able to experiment with an electron microscope. Members of the Department of Molecular Physics conducted experiments with the girls using liquid nitrogen and explained how important low temperatures are for their research. The Physical Chemistry Department had prepared various hands-on experiments on the topic of light, and in the Theory Department, the girls used LEGO bricks to explore how molecules are structured. Another highlight of the day was the craft project in the workshops, where the girls built small vehicles under the guidance of dedicated staff members.

Girls' Day is meant to show young girls new opportunities, broaden their horizons, and help break down old stereotypes. It’s wonderful that, thanks to the tireless dedication of our experts in physics, chemistry, engineering, and electronics, we’re able to contribute to this effort year after year. Girls’ Day has already become a tradition at the Fritz Haber Institute, the program is so popular that our spots always fill up quickly. The girls were thrilled with Girls’ Day at our institute again this year. We hope that their day at our institute and the exciting insights into the world of physics and chemistry have made the idea of pursuing a career in STEM a little more appealing to them!

This day was not only enriching for the participants, but also reminded us once again of how valuable our work is and the positive impact we can have on the next generation. We would like to extend our heartfelt thanks to everyone at our institute for their support in making Girls’ Day 2026 a success. We are already looking forward to the next one.
