DESY Photon-Science User Award for Dr. Florian Trinter
On January 29, Dr. Florian Trinter, research group leader in the Molecular Physics Department at the Fritz Haber Institute of the Max Planck Society, was awarded this year's Photon Science User Award by DESY (Deutsches Elektronen-Synchrotron).
Dr. Florian Trinter and his team regularly visit DESY (Deutsches Elektronen-Synchrotron) in Hamburg to take measurements for their research projects at the radiation source. The significant commitment of Dr. Trinter was now honored with the 2026 DESY Photon-Science User Award. He receives the award for his “innovative research of the interaction between X-rays and atoms in solution”. The award ceremony, featuring a laudation by Prof. Dr. Peter Müller-Buschbaum, Chair of the DESY Photon Science User Committee, and a short overview talk by Florian Trinter, took place on January 29 in Hamburg as part of the DESY Photon Science and European XFEL Users' Meeting.
At the Fritz Haber Institute, Dr. Trinter leads the Emmy Noether research group “Dynamics of photoionization-induced processes in laser-prepared gas- and aqueous-phase samples” (DYNAMO-PLAS) in the Molecular Physics Department. The group investigates processes in atoms and molecules that are induced by irradiation with X-rays. They study molecules in the gas phase as well as solvated species in liquid jets. For their experiments, they use soft X-rays generated by the PETRA III synchrotron at DESY, which they combine with their own experimental equipment and, in future experiments, with their own laser system brought along for the measurement periods.
The physicist Dr. Trinter already has quite a long history with DESY. After completing his PhD in 2017, he worked as a beamline scientist at DESY. Since October 2018, he has been an affiliated Principal Investigator (PI) with the MaxWater initiative of the Max-Planck-Gesellschaft. At the FHI, he first joined Dr. Bernd Winter's group at the Molecular Physics Department before starting his own research group within the Emmy Noether Programme in 2024.
More about DESY and the Award
The German Electron Synchrotron DESY is a large research facility for fundamental scientific research based in Hamburg and Zeuthen. It is one of the world's largest centers for research on and with particle accelerators. With the light from DESY, researchers from Germany and abroad investigate the structure, dynamics, and function of matter.
The DESY Photon-Science User Award recognizes unique and exceptional contributions to the general advancement of science using DESY's light sources. The award, endowed with 1000 € and a certificate, is presented annually during the joint DESY Photon Science and European XFEL Users' Meeting held in Hamburg.
